August Beauty Haul

How is it the end of August y’all, when the heck did that happen? I swear it was just January like a week and half ago, this year is just flying by and I am not sure how I feel about it.

I feel like this is one of my favorite posts to write, I would love to make more videos on things like this. (and I hope by the time you guys are reading this I have actually restarted my YouTube channel as it has been on hiatus since May and I am ready to actually get back in front of the camera. It’s looking more like September now but you can go and watch all of my old videos on WaitIt’sMJ in the link here.) That however is not what this post is about. No, no it’s about what I bought when it came to beauty this month that I probably didn’t need. Okay some of it I actually needed but most of it was “oh, I love that, I need it.” I get need and want confused sometimes in my brain, I need to work on that. I would say my voice of reason could help me avoid this but normally she is the one going, “Girl those colors are just slightly different from all of the other palettes you have, you should get it.” And then I walk out of Ulta with a bag that I didn’t walk in intending on purchasing. Seriously I went into Ulta for a Morphe fan brush a few months ago and I walked out with foundation, (which in truth I needed) two lipsticks, and another eyeshadow palette. You can refer to my March Beauty Haul for those items. It’s like passing out and waking up in an Ulta with a bag full of items that you don’t remember picking up. I need someone to go with me every time I walk into that store and keep me on task because I clearly should not be trusted to walk into that store by myself. Sephora, yea because some of those brands are amazing but when you see a single highlighter for $60 or so you kind of put things in perspective that you can find a cheaper dupe for that and not spend $60 on one highlighter.

Rant over and now to the products:

I have found myself walking into some very random stores in the last few months and one was TJ Maxx, I don’t think I have actually ever been in one even though Marshall’s and Home Goods are places that I frequently frequent. (Yes, that is just as ridiculous to read as it was to write.) My Marshall’s back in Indiana never had designer makeup. (want to see what I found there last month, click here.) I walked into TJ Maxx looking for a smaller bag because I have a backpack and I would sometimes prefer not to carry it. I did not walk out with a purse, I walked out with a pair of tongs (which I did need), a pass port cover (it’s holo and I love it.), and two Kat Von D products.

IMG_8270.jpgNow one of these products I contemplated buying at Sephora a few months ago but my store at the time did not have the product but it was there at TJ Maxx and I was all for it. It was her Shade + Light eye palette in Sage. Now back in the day I had several eyeshadow quads, I have since graduated to palettes and most of my quads have gone into the trash because they were old but there are sometimes when I just want to do a simple look or just have a more compact and travel sized palette that I can still do a few looks with and this palette is much more of my 2005 emo/scene phase color palette and I was there for it when I picked it up. Now I have green eyes, I should have gotten this product in plum because it would have worked a little better with my eye color but I love the dark shade in this little palette.

IMG_8268.jpgNext Kat Von D product was her Studded Kiss Lipstick in the shade Coven, who knew I needed a lavender lipstick, Kat Von D did, she knew that out there somewhere would be someone who needed lavender lipstick and it was in this case me. Her packaging is to die for, I love the studded lipstick cover, again my 2005 emo self is quaking because it is amazing. The pigmentation is amazing and I cannot wait to find an occasion, or make an occasion to wear this lip color because your girl is excited for it.

IMG_8264.jpgNext up, so I have been watching a lot of beauty guru videos in the last few weeks because they have been providing me with so much joy. I love watching people who are passionate about things be able to do the things they are passionate about. Well one of the videos I was watching talked about lip scrub and I am one of those people who has done a sugar scrub about once in my life but would like to do it on a more regular basis. I went to Ulta and I bought the Tee Hut Sugar Lips Sugar Scrub and first of all, it’s amazing. It’s minty and it left my lips really soft, I wanted one where you could just ingest the sugar where as some of the ones I was looking at were more for lip exfoliation so they had pieces of things in them that were not edible. 10/10 would recommend.

IMG_8267.jpgSo this next item was something that has been on my wish list for a few months now but every time I walked into my Ulta it was out of stock and that was the Morphe High Impact Highlighter in the shade Extra. (That’s a great color choice name.) I love Morphe and I was so happy when Ulta began carrying the brand, though of course I wish they carried what the Morphe stores carried but at this time they do not. There are a few brands that they have online and in other stores but not in my store and it makes me rather sad. Back to the highlighter though, it is a champagne gold shimmer and it does pop which I am always looking for. Again I have been told by YouTube beauty gurus that my highlight should be blinding and I am still working on it.

IMG_8269.jpgI went and got more lipstick, don’t ask me why, I don’t have many non-NYX lipsticks so getting another Kat Von D lipstick made me happy, this time it is in the shade Homegirl and it is a beautiful berry color and I am a huge fan of it because it is going to be a nice autumnal shade to add to my collection as we creep closer and closer to those fall months. Who else is excited for leaves changing and pumpkin everything? Because I for sure am and have been since last fall.

IMG_8271.jpgRemember how I said maybe I would go back and buy the Plum shade in the Kat Von D Shade + Light palette, well when I went back to TJ Maxx it was gone. I was in Marshall’s later in the month and I was wandering around and I saw it and I snatched it right up because I had thought about it for almost three weeks. I was excited to see it on the shelf though and I was happy with the colors and again, I love eyeshadow quads because those were where I started when I was beginning to wear and purchase makeup. I feel like this shade will make my eyes pop and I am excited because for a long time all I wore was shades of purple and this is just a throwback to my original style in a way.

IMG_8272.jpgThis will probably be my last item of the month and it was an item that I was not expecting to purchase. Urban Decay put on their Instagram that they were discontinuing the original Naked palette and I have been coveting the whole Naked palette line for years now. I got the Naked Smoky and Naked 3 palettes for my birthday a few years ago and so when Urban Decay posted that the palette would be half off while supplies lasted I jumped at it, it’s normally a $54 palette and granted I would spend that much on it because I have been a fan of Urban Decay since I started wearing makeup. I think my original powder foundation was Urban Decay so I have been loving them for a long time now. I actually had to Google Image what it was called and after scrolling for a few minutes I found it, it was the Surreal Skin Mineral Foundation and I think I had it in the lightest shade they made. Memories, y’all, memories, but back to the present and this palette. This palette was always kind of a game changer in the makeup world and that view is strengthened because of how people have been reacting since the announcement, they even held a funeral for it and that is so extra, I love it. When I was buying mine at Ulta one of the girls who works there said that this palette was her first palette and I think a lot of people shared that sentiment over all. This is not my first palette but it will go down as one of my favorites. The packaging is something that I have always loved from Urban Decay, this palette feels like a velvet on the outside and the colors like the rest of Urban Decay’s collections are amazing. The original Naked palette is something that I am going to love playing with in the coming months as we move into autumn.

Did you get any new products in August?

What Was in My August ispy Glam Bag?

Here it is again, MJ opens up her glam bag. I had no tracking information for this so I had no clue when it was going to show up at my apartment so that is why this post is a day later than I expected it to be. If you want to read my other entries for Glam Bags here is April, May, June, and July.

IMG_8224.jpg

The bag itself almost feels like a thin canvas in orange with yellow piping, yellow zipper and zipper pull. It reminds me of a cantaloupe to be honest and I think that is the perfect close out to summer.

Now why don’t we talk about what was in the bag itself. Spoiler alert, it did no disappoint!

August.jpeg

(1) Bang Beauty- Smokey eye shadow quad

This is the smallest eyeshadow quad I have ever seen. I love the colors within the palette because they are all very pigmented and the metallic colors in it all work together with the matte shade. This seems like it will be great for travel because it is so compact. I have never heard of Bang Beauty but I am really happy with my first brush with their products.  I swatched this product and I was so happy with the pigmentation and how the colors played next to one another, I am so excited to use these in my makeup looks in the future.

(2) Pixi by Petra- Blush in BeachRose

I have been meaning to buy Pixi products for almost a year now ever since I started seeing them in Target but I always find myself walking away and not actually buying anything. I have swatched this and I love how it feels on my skin as well as how it comes out of the pan. I love the mint and copper packaging and I am really looking forward to adding this into my collection of blushes.

(3) Caité London- Glow-To Highlighter in shade Moondust

I love a good highlighter; it has become a staple in my beauty routine only in about the last year or so. This is a single pan highlighter in what I can only describe as a plastic bubble packaging, I don’t know what to call it. The outer box came a little damaged but there was nothing wrong with the product itself. I plan on popping it out of the plastic casing and putting it in my magnetic palette so it has a more permanent home in my makeup collection. It is a beautiful medium gold and looks amazing on the skin. I have heard of Caité before but there are not many places around me that actually sell it in the store and I like to be able to swatch things before I purchase them.

(4) Answer From- Black Volume Gold Radiance Cream

It has blackberry extract in it and according to the ipsy website it helps with hydration, brightening (the blackberry) and firming (gold pearl). So that sounds great, I am a huge fan of skin care but I don’t have a dozen steps in my routine, I probably should have more and do it more consistently because my skin is not getting any younger. I still really like getting the sample size bottles in my ipsy bag because if it doesn’t react well with my skin I am not getting rid of a full sized product because my skin is so sensitive. I will let y’all know how it goes when I actually try it.

(5) Lab for You- Juice Up Face Masks in Kale and Blackberry

I will have enough face masks to last me for a year by the time I am done with getting face masks from ispy, don’t’ get me wrong I love a good sheet mask but I have gotten quite a few of them over the course of the last few months. This is another K-beauty sheet mask and they are known for their skin care so I am excited to try it and I have never had a blackberry or a kale sheet mask, I had to look up the benefits of each mask on the ipsy website. The kale mask helps with redness (which is right up my street) and the blackberry helps with brightening. So I got two blackberry products within this glam bag, I love blackberries so I am really excited to try this mask.

I want to do a full face of makeup with all of the products that I get from my ipsy bags so I am slowly collecting the items, I know that foundation and concealer will be something that I probably will never get because those are so subjective to each person’s skin tone so that would make it difficult to send out in the bags which I understand because you don’t want to send someone the wrong shade or the wrong undertone because then they are not going to use it.

Do you subscribe to ipsy? What did you get in your August Glam Bag?

5 More Eyeshadow Palette Favorites

So I did a post like this a few months ago in regard to my top 5 favorite or go to eye shadow palettes. I feel like I could do five or six of these posts to actually get through my palette collection. I need to stop buying palettes but let’s be honest they come out with so many a year that are amazing that I want all of them.

I tend to roll through three or four eyeshadow palettes at a time where I use those palettes over and over again until I get tired of them and move on to another palette, I do go back to palettes do not get me wrong but like I had my original Top 5 I have 5 more to show you today.

Like last time I am going to talk about each palette individually.

IMG_8069.jpgTarte-Tartelette Toasted

Okay this one has been one of my favorites since it came out last year. I have used it a lot since then. I think Tarte is one of my favorite brands for eyeshadow I love their formula and their eyeshadow smells great. That’s not normally something you think about when it comes to eyeshadow, smell. It has a pretty even distribution of shimmer and matte shades all in warm tones that are perfect for the fall. I think this was my go to palette last fall in my YouTube videos and whenever I needed to wear makeup because it is small and compact enough to carry around unlike some of my larger palettes. This is the only tartelette palette that I own but I have the tartist pro (that was in my top 5 post), their magic star palette that came out around Christmas, and the Be a Mermaid & Make Waves palette.

IMG_8184.jpg

Too Faced- La Petite Maison

Normally the time of your that I buy Too Faced is the holiday’s I got this palette a few years ago. I love the formula for Too Faced, their Sweet Peach palette is one of my absolute go to’s when it comes to a lot of looks. I use this one usually around the holidays or during the winter because it has some beautiful colors in it and the packaging it came in was amazing, I finally got rid of it about four months before I moved from Indiana. I love Too Faced packaging especially around the holidays. They never disappoint on the color pay off or the pigmentation of the color.

IMG_8070.jpgLorac- Pro 3

Lorac is a relatively new brand in my makeup bag or even in my collection, I think my first palette that I got from that brand was the California Dreaming palette and I have not looked back since. The only problem I have with this one is the color Medallion in my palette is pressed too loose and it comes out in chunks and flakes instead of coming off nicely on the brush and nicely on the eye but that is the only color that I have encountered that was not pressed all that well but it is one of my favorite colors in the palette so that makes me a little sad. I love Lorac’s formula because it goes on well and blends well and all of the colors in this palette are a nice neutral so it goes with all looks and can be used year round.

IMG_8185.jpgUrban Decay X Kristen Leanne- Kaleidoscope Dream

This is probably the most daring palette in my collection and I am not mad about it. This palette is so colorful and so pigmented, there is even and iridescent shade in it that is a combo of two colors, I have worn it sparingly on my eyes and it is beautiful. The colors are so out there and amazing to say the least, I swatched these and my arm looked like a rainbow. I cannot speak more highly of this palette, again Urban Decay is one of my favorite brands. I think my first good foundation was an Urban Decay powder foundation in probably 2007 so this brand has been in my makeup bag for quite some time now and I don’t see that changing any time soon. I love to see brands do collaborations with people and this is no exception.

IMG_8071.jpgMorphe – 35 W

Morphe is a great brand, their packaging is simple but their products are amazing. I have been obsessed with Morphe for a little over a year now. I was so happy when I was able to get it at Ulta because I am one of those people who like to see the makeup before I buy it and also I don’t trust shipping when it comes to makeup especially with eyeshadow because I don’t want to open up my package and find half of the pans cracked. I love Morphe though and this palette is so multi-functional when it comes to colors and looks because there is such a variety of color throughout the palette.

I have come to the conclusion that I need to wear more makeup because I have so many amazing products that I don’t actually use enough because I don’t wear makeup frequently. I love to look at it, swatch it, and then let it sit in a drawer until I want to write a blog post with it. It’s not a good method because all of these products are just calling for me to use them. I feel like sometimes I am limited by my skills when it comes to makeup but then again I remember that I actually need to do my makeup to get any better, it’s such a paradox. Or getting new palettes and having to play tetris to get them all in the drawer, I don’t have a lot of makeup storage space at the moment (I am working on it) but I keep adding to the collection and I need to stop until I have the space to actually put things in.

What are some of your favorite eyeshadow palettes or single shadows?

Foundation Application Tool Comparison

I feel like I have been putting off this blog post for quite some time and I don’t actually know why. It was not a hard process but I will say if I was to do it again, I would just use my actual face but my skin has been so bad for the last few weeks that I didn’t want to subject the internet to that visual.

You may be thinking to yourself as you read through this post, why are the balloons blue? Because I like blue and as I was running out of Target they were the first ones that I saw when I was in there the other day, I went in for the balloons and coffee creamer and still almost forgot both of them. That’s what happens when you go on a Target run, you get 17 things that were not on your list and you also forget the one thing that you go in for. I have done it so many times and then I have to stop somewhere else on my way home and get that one thing because it is just embarrassing to walk back into the Target for that one thing.

Okay disclaimer time, these are my personal opinions, believe me this was a learning experience for me too as I put foundation on balloons on a Thursday morning in my bathroom hoping that no one was going to judge me.

A tip for washing makeup brushes, I have found that using dish soap really helps; it cuts through grease so you know it will get things clean. I use Dawn and water and it makes my brushes feel soft, clean, and actually smell really good. You do need to make sure that they are cleaned and rinsed thoroughly because otherwise you will just have soap in your brushes when you go to clean them. Also when it comes to cleaning invest in a brush cleaning mat, mine looks like a cactus and I found it at Marshall’s, it has really helped me get my brushes clean and make sure that I am getting all of the makeup out of the bristles so I can feel good about them not being germ ridden nightmares next time I am trying to do my makeup.

The foundation I used was Maybelline’s Fit Me Matte and Poreless in the shade 110 (I think it is one of their lightest if not their lightest) I got this one because I have heard good things about it and I got it in my shade so I can still use it even after this post. I think it would be really wasteful if I bought it just for this post and then let it sit in my makeup collection collecting dust. I also got this one because it is a drug store brand, it can be found in many places and it is not $40 like my Urban Decay foundation.

Application Method One: A beauty sponge.

All images show the clean applicator, the balloon, and then the applicator after the application process is over.

This is not a Beauty Blender, that is a specific brand this is a beauty sponge and I got it last month in anticipation for this. If you want to see how I felt about it when I got it go check out my July Beauty Haul post. Now I tried the application both with the sponge dry and with the sponge damp.

Looking at the pictures I hope that it is pretty clear that a damp beauty sponge in this case worked a lot better. Now my one issue with this is how much product that you lose in the process of using a sponge; a sponge is used to soak things up and even though this sponge is pretty high density foam it still soaked up quite a bit of product. I have only used a beauty sponge a few times because I have heard from several people that you have to throw them away pretty frequently because of the potential of bacteria build up and I really don’t want to add to my skin problems.

Final Verdict:Would I use this applicator again, yes, I would. I liked the buffing effect I got with it and because it is egg shaped like the Beauty Blender so you can use it for foundation, concealer, and powder.

Application Method Two: A silicon beauty applicator

I feel as if I need to disclose that this is the application product I use on a regular basis; I am a huge fan of the silicon applicator. I find that it puts my foundation on pretty evenly as well as being a little easier to hold than a brush or a beauty sponge. I actually used too much product so I had to put some back in the bottle because I am still used to having use a lot of product when it comes to foundation using a brush so I had to take some off. Does it buff as well as a beauty sponge, no, not really.

As you can see by the picture it did have a pretty even coverage across the balloon, I used a little bit too much so it does look a little like frosting on a cake but I tend to reach for this when I am applying foundation. It doesn’t soak in the product and all that you have to do is wash it off at the end of your makeup application and it is ready to use again. Because it does not soak anything in I feel more comfortable about it not harboring germs that could later go onto my face.

Final Verdict: I use this product most frequently since I got it a few months ago, I find that it gets the job done and I enjoy using it because it doesn’t waste a lot of product which means that you use less and therefore can save some money over the life of the bottle of foundation that you are using.

Application Method Three: Oval Mermaid Brush

So I lived by the mermaid brush for well over a year. I am a huge fan of it but it is really hard to clean. This is actually my second or third mermaid foundation brush because with the last one I had I broke the brush part while washing it. RIP that brush. I like that it buffs in well and it makes the foundation look pretty good, it can get a little streaky because it is indeed a brush. I prefer the mermaid brush to a paint brush shape because it is denser and therefore it is easier to work with.

This brush does soak up some of the product and can be interesting to clean out because it is so dense but it is a great brush when it comes to making your foundation look amazing. Again, it’s a balloon there are limitations to it exactly looking and acting like skin.

Final Verdict:I have been using a mermaid brush for a long time; at least three years and it is something that I reached for every time before I got my silicon applicator and I know that it is a staple in my makeup bag because it is something that I like to use when doing foundation.

Application Method Four: Brush

I don’t know what else to call this, it is a traditional paint brush shape and for me like I can expect many others this was the type of brush we all had as our first liquid foundation brush. You felt like you were putting extreme brush strokes on your face and if you were like me you didn’t notice or at the time how to fix it to make it look like it wasn’t just painted onto your face like you were painting a wall.

I got this brush in Sephora probably 10 years ago when I really started to do my makeup when I was in high school. It was my first foundation brush so it did its job for several years; it has been semi-retired since then because I find that I like it least, I don’t like feeling like I am physically painting my face on. I have never liked that feeling, buffing with the brush for me is almost an impossibility so therefore I would be streaky and uneven when I had foundation on and that was pretty common for years.

I finally retired it after I was done with university a few years ago and I made sure to still keep it around but it is there are a treasure to be the probably last of my first products from Sephora that I still own.

Final Verdict: I don’t use this brush much anymore, it did its job when I was learning to wear makeup and it is a tried and true brush for me. Times have changed in my makeup bag and it will always remain as part of my all-star collection that reminds me of my makeup applications of time past. It is probably however my least favorite foundation application method.

So what are your favorite things to apply foundation with? Do you have any suggestions of methods that I should use in the future?

July Beauty Haul

I wasn’t really expecting to be doing this post this month because I honestly didn’t think that I would be buying many beauty items this month and then…I did. Well let’s get into it then. MJ bought more than she was planning on this month and that’s okay because sometimes that happens.

I only went to two places for beauty this month and that was Ulta and then Marshall’s. (A place that I went to for a purse but walked out with makeup instead.)

Let’s run through Ulta first.

IMG_8141.jpg

I went into the store early in the month and picked up the Urban Decay Born to Run palette because I saw it on Instagram and I wanted it so bad because he had some interesting colors in it and Urban Decay always not only has great packaging but also their pigmentation is amazing, if you have read my Top 5 Eyeshadow Palettes posts you know how much I love Urban Decay, I feel like one of their palettes was in my Makeup Bag Essentials also. I love the color spectrum in this palette because the colors are so vibrant and so unique so I knew that I had to have it and I love it.

1.jpeg

A few years ago I got a NYX advent calendar and I finally ripped all of the little boxes that had the pans of eyeshadow apart and I purchased this tarte magnetic palette (1) to house them. I am a fan of the depotting things trend so I needed a place to put all of my depotted things. I still need to get magnets to put on the bottom of the pans to make them stick to the new palette but that is something that I am still working on.

I got an email telling me that a Morphe palette was on sale I went and jumped on it, it was the Natural Glow palette (2). I am a huge fan of Morphe and this palette seems like a great neutral palette, also it looks like a great autumnal palette so I am excited to actually use this. Morphe changed their packaging again and they now have the plastic insert with the shade names and I was excited because it makes it so much easier to talk about the colors with a name attached to them.

I have never been on the setting powder train but I have been watching a lot of YouTube beauty guru’s in the last few weeks and so I figured, why not try it. I bought the Revolution Luxury Baking Powder (3) because I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on something that I may not enjoy using. I got it in the shade ghost which is white, it looks like straight talcum powder, (yes talc is an ingredient but still) like I feel like if I put it on I am going to look like a real ghost.

The last thing I got at Ulta was a RealTechniques 300 powder brush (4), I don’t actually have a loose powder brush, I don’t know why but I do not so I found myself needing one. I know that you can use a beauty blender to put your setting powder on, I don’t know I will try both. I love the coloring of the brush because it is an ombre pink and purple and that’s amazing.

Marshall’s is not a place I usually look for makeup but I was wandering around there and I found some really good items.

Now I was a little shocked to see some of the items that I did there this time because normally the makeup that you find at Marshall’s is from brands that I have never heard of but this time was different. Maybe it’s because I moved and there is a different selection here then there was in Northern Indiana.

IMG_8144.jpg

I have been thinking about getting a beauty blender sponge quite a bit recently because I am eventually going to do a foundation application blog post, granted I did not buy a beauty blender brand sponge because they are expensive. I bought a knock off and these pictures are damp (right) and dry (left). The rose water bottle is just for scale, though the rose water was in my Current Favorites video so if you want to check that post out; go ahead. I went and purchased a second one of these because you are supposed to get rid of them after a few months because of the potential for bacteria build up.( Yes I know that the pictures are at slightly different angles, it was hard because it took the sponge quite some time to fully dry and get back down to its original size because I didn’t think about taking the comparison photo until after I had run it under the tap. When damp it is probably almost double the size it is when dry.)

2.jpeg

The next item was something that I have been thinking about again for a while, I have been seeing the trend of magnetic lashes (1) online recently and I have never used fake lashes anyway but the magnetic ones seemed really interesting so I am looking forward to trying them out.

These next three I was really shocked to see there because they were all designer brands.

I found an Anastasia Beverly Hills Aurora Glow Kit (2)  and I was shocked to see it there. I finally swatched the colors and I was blown away, I feel like most of my current highlighters are all peachy or golden hues but these are more interesting and variable and I am a huge fan of that glow pop they give. Super looking forward to incorporating them into a look or more than one look because they promise to be very beautiful.

I found a Lorac (3) crème lipstick in the color Girl Next Door, I am not a big user of crème lipsticks anymore but I feel like the colors that I have in crème lipsticks are all more on the pink side of the spectrum than my liquid lipsticks.

The other lipstick I found was an Anastasia Beverly Hills liquid lipstick (4) in the color “Stripped” it is amazing and yet another nude lipstick to add to my collection. I am looking forward to using this as well.

I went a little crazy in the makeup and beauty buying department this month but that was okay because I got some great products and some great deals out of the equation.

Did you buy any new makeup or beauty products this month? Did you add anything new to your beauty routine?

Some Current Favorites

Well it’s been some time since I have actually done a favorites post and I kind of missed it. I feel like I have not had too many favorites in the last few months just because my life has been a little busy.

So these favorites are over the last few months (April, May, and June) I did do an April Favorites video over on my YouTube channel but I never actually wrote a blog on it (oops, my bad.)  Also, to be honest May and June got away from me. I feel like most of them are beauty related because those are what I have been using and that is why I remember them.

First thing is first, this product was in my spring fabfitfun box, the Murad Skin Perfecting Lotion. I use this product every day, I love it so much, there are very few lotions and skin care products so when I find one that doesn’t make my skin irritated I cling to it. I cannot say enough nice things about it, I actually bought the Oli-Control Mattifier lotion as well which is also a sun screen so it has really been saving my skin and I love that just as much. Seriously one of my favorites for the last few months.

IMG_8102.jpg

This was one of my favorites throughout April and into the summer months and that is my Lorac Malibu palette, it is four eye shades and two cheek shades, I normally don’t use the cheek shades when they are included in an eye palette but I have found myself using them throughout the summer because I actually have a tan. I love the summery and more neutral colors of the palette, it stays on pretty well and I found myself reaching for it over and over again when I just wanted to do a normal simple every day look when I don’t use my NYX Cosmetic Metals palette. If you want to read my normal makeup routine, you can, here.

I not only got tan this summer but I also burned, that is my usual summer plan, burn, and then back to being translucent. I had a friend tell me to use rose water on my burn to rehydrate my skin. It helped so much and I also use rose water with my moisturizer and the one that I have been using is the Soo AE Revitalizing Rose Mist and I have been using it religiously because I do not hydrate my face enough. It for sure helped my burn though and I am happy to say it did tan out which was the hope.

I am one of those people who keeps lotion everywhere no matter what because I always need it because my hands are always dry, I think part of it is the air conditioning and I have been spending a lot of time outside in the hot. One brand that I can only get in limited form is Zoella Beauty, I have been following her channel on YouTube for quite some time now and I have not been without a tube of Wonder Hand in a while now and it is one of my favorite lotions at the moment.

IMG_8104.jpg

So I bought a CD in June that I loved and have been waiting for the release of for quite some time was the new Panic! At The Disco album Pray for the Wicked. I listened to it three or four times on release day and I love its sound. I can’t ever describe Panic! At The Disco’s sound because it has evolved so much since their first album that I listened to in middle school. I have grown up with Panic and I am always happy to hear new music from them, it’s a new sound, it’s a good sound, and I was here for it.

IMG_8107.jpg

One final thing in my current favorites. I had to get a new pop clip for my car, I have one so I can put my Popsocket into a holder in my car. I had one that was adhered to my dashboard but in early May it came off my dash. Well when I was in Indiana in May I got a new pop clip that is fitted into the vent in the car instead of sticking to the dash and I have found it so much easier and so much nicer to use because my phone screen is actually visible instead of being toward the sky. I am a huge fan of the pop clip and because I spend so much time in my car it has really saved my sanity in the car, I listen to a lot of music in the car so it’s nice to be able to have a better control over it when I am at stop lights without moving it from its holder.

There were some of my current favorites, I am hoping that for this month (July) I will have more to share next month (August) when I actually post that blog post.

Do you have any favorites this month that you can’t find yourself living without or find yourself reaching for over and over again?

What was in my July ipsy Glam Bag?

It’s that time again, I got my July ipsy Glam Bag in the mail yesterday and I could not wait to rip into it and see what I got. I must say the tracking information on this package was sparse and normally it is not, it also took a really long time to get to my apartment but I am not blaming that on anyone, just making an observation. I will have posted three Glam Bag unbaggings this month but hopefully in the foreseeable future I will only be posting one a month, because let’s be real three is a lot to post in one month. I unbagged May and June earlier in the month, if you want to read those you can click on the month and read them for yourselves.

Moving on from that though, I was so excited for this bag the moment I got the email that it was on its way. I just wish, this is my only complaint with ipsy’s emails, that they wouldn’t show you the items so close to the top of the email in case you want to be surprised by it. I like the surprise aspect of it all and I knew one of the items I was getting long before I got it. I like being able to make the informed decision whether or not to have what’s in my bag spoiled for me but sometimes the formatting of their emails don’t really give me a choice but to be partially spoiled.

On to the bag, first of all I love this bag. I think it is my favorite so far it is blue holo. (Yes it is holo, it gives off rainbows in the light don’t come for me.) The picture doesn’t really do it justice though; it is much prettier in real life. From the picture online I just thought it was a shiny blue, I honestly thought it was going to be plastic but it’s a soft almost pleather feeling material. I love getting a bag every month because it just adds more bags for me to use when I need to take the small essentials with me on trips.

IMG_8088.jpg

On to the items that I got in the bag this month.

July.jpeg

1: IBY Beauty Eyeshadow Fluff Brush: I will say the same thing every time I love getting new brushes, I never know when to buy new brushes nor do I know what to buy so I like having someone pick brushes out for me. It is a synthetic brush that is vegan and cruelty-free according to the description on the ipsy website. I am looking forward to using this brush, it is nice and soft which I am a huge fan of.

2: Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner: I am so bad at eyeliner, like I would love to do a wing and not have it everywhere on my face by the time I am finished. I used to use a crayon liner before liquid liner was popular and to me that was so much easier to use than a liquid liner. I have not worn eyeliner since about 2008, it’s been like ten years because I cannot do it to save my life, I keep trying to do it properly but to be real, I need professional help in that department. I like eyeliner, I used to wear a lot of it so it would be nice to do it again, though I wear glasses so eyeliner normally goes unnoticed. I don’t know how people can do a perfect wing every time, I applaud you.

3: Pure Heals by Nature Village Pore Clear Black Charcoal Peel Off Mask: I have never done a peel off mask beyond pore strips for your nose. I have been wanting to try a charcoal peel off mask for over a year now since it has been such a trend all over the internet. They are so good for your skin from what I have heard. This product is from a brand that I haven’t heard of but I am excited to try it. From the description on the ipsy website it is a K-Beauty brand which again K-Beauty is becoming/ has been a huge trend for quite some time now and I am here for it.

4: Half Caked Lip Fondant in the shade Girl Crush: Wow is this red! It’s so red you guys, it may not be a color for me but I am excited to try it to see what I think of it. To be honest I am not a huge fan of the color, it’s a bit too loud for me and I swatched it and it’s so bright. It will take a certain makeup look and even a certain skin tone, my skin is pale enough that it would almost look like those candy lips you get at Halloween. The brand seems really interesting; I love the packaging but the color just isn’t for me. I will keep it in my collection for now for maybe more intense and crazy looks, maybe Halloween. I think this is the first product that I haven’t liked from my ipsy Glam Bags since I started getting them in April. Granted I know that not all products are going to hit the marks and this was definitely one of those products.

5: Ella Eden single pot eyeshadow in the shade Harmony:  This is the last product, I love the color I can almost equate it to a rose gold or a peachy rose color and it looks amazing. Again, I swatched it and I am looking forward to using this shade it is very summer and I am excited to actually use it in a makeup look. I still don’t know how I feel about single put shadows because I have bought so many palettes in recent memory, but I can understand the need of them for travel purposes and also for sample products because if the product is good then there is a good chance that other products will be purchased from the company. (How many times can I type product in a sentence before it gets annoying? Three, then it gets annoying.) I’m excited to try it out though and see if it as long wear as some of the other shadows that I have.

For the most part I loved all of the products that I got in this month’s Glam Bag. I am looking forward to using the products as well as looking forward to what I will get in my bag next month.

If you subscribe what did you get this month and what did you think?

Every Day Makeup Routine

I feel like I need to start this post with a disclaimer, I do not wear makeup every day. I do not have the time or the energy to put my face on every single day. Besides I think that after a straight week or two my skin would hate me so much it would go on strike and I don’t want to walk around faceless. Well that got a little dark, sorry. However, I do wear makeup frequently when I have to, I like looking nice but on days when it is about 100 degrees outside there is a point when it just becomes pointless to wear makeup that is either melting off, being sweat off, or clogging all of your pores because your skin is trying to breathe in the heat.

On days when I am outside and it is that warm I normally just stick with my No. 7 Tinted Moisturizer in the shade Fair, which is actually a little too dark for me most of the year but when I am tan it is fine. (Seriously, I went on a date in May and I wore that, concealer, mascara, and chapstick and it was fine.) Being outside most or all of your day means that you need to have something on your skin otherwise you could be doing significant damage to your skin in the long term.

On to my normal makeup routine though. I feel like a lot of these products are a repeat from my Makeup Bag Essentials post from a few months ago but I tend to keep the basic staples ready for my everyday look and add to it if I need to transition to a more formal or more fun look for the evening. (Let’s be honest, I don’t go out very often, I look forward to taking my makeup off at the end of the day.)

One of my friends refers to this as my “drug store” makeup because for the most part you could walk into a drug store and find most of the products that I have here, you could also walk into some Target’s and most Ulta’s and find everything that I am listing below. It keeps the price point down on most items and you could probably find dupes for the more expensive items (the foundation and concealer) in a drug store as well. This is for the most part also what I used in my 10 Minute Makeup Routine video on my YouTube channel. (Ignore the fact that it was like 20 minutes because I talk too much.)

IMG_8067.jpg

Primer is a must for me and I use NYX’s Photo Loving Primer in Green because I have a red undertone to my skin because rosacea is a pain in the butt to have because I always look like I am blushing, I am not. (Only sometimes.) I have found that it is a pretty good more cost effective dupe for Smashbox’s primer also in green, I would not say it was a perfect dupe it is a bit more of a thinner consistency than the Smashbox primer but there is also a large price difference, the Smashbox version will run you about $39 for a 1.0-ounce size and the NYX version runs about $13 for the same size. So this product has been a staple in my makeup bag for well over a year now because I prefer a colored primer rather than a colored concealer.

Foundation is something that I have to be careful of when I buy it because I have to use products that are for the most part non-comedogenic which means it doesn’t clog your pores. Now for the most part I use more of the high end foundations, well they are probably more mid-range normally I switch between Too Faced and Urban Decay, my current favorite and go to for my every day is Urban Decay’s All Nighter liquid foundation on the shade 0.5. (The only reason I am not using my Too Faced foundation is because it is a shade too dark for me and it has a very yellow undertone and I cannot wear it, it makes me look a little ill.) I have used more drug store brands in the past and while I have liked them for short term wear for long term wear I find that many of them break me out so I tend to only use them for short term applications.

Concealer now the only concealer that I have ever used is Urban Decay’s Naked Skin in the shade Fair Neutral. I like using the same brand for foundation and concealer, maybe one day I will branch out to other brands but for now this is the concealer that I stand by for all of my makeup looks. Under the eyes, around the nostrils, and on any blemishes that I might have around my face, blending that all in with a blending brush so it doesn’t look too obvious against my foundation.

Eyebrows are something that I fill in pretty much regardless of what I am doing if I am wearing makeup, I didn’t do my eyebrows until I was out of college because no one told me that I needed to fill my eyebrows in so I didn’t have a nice blonde tint to my normally dark brown eyebrows. Now I used the ELF eyebrow products for quite some time and in a pinch I would go back to them because I prefer the gel and powder combination in the compact instead of in a pencil form. Now I use Rimmel Cosmetic’s Brow This Way in Medium Brown because I find that it is very easy to use, it looks nice and it doesn’t take a lot of time to apply it and still make it look good. This had been another staple in my bag for well over a year now, probably more like two or three because a few of the beauty guru’s I follow on YouTube suggested it at the time and I found myself going to three drug stores to find it.

Eyeshadow is something that some people I know don’t actually include in their everyday makeup because it takes too long but I do because it adds a pop of color to my eyes while still looking relatively natural. Normally I would go for less shiny or metallic shades but for simple looks I tend to actually like to have some metallic shades in the mix. Now for my every day look I tend to reach for my NYX Cosmic Metals eyeshadow palette, I use shade 1 all over my eyelid, 2 for the outer corner and underneath the eye below my lash line, 3 for the middle of the lid, and 1 again for the inner corner.

n.jpeg

Mascara what can I say about mascara? I tend to have several that I like but only use a few and for the most part I tend to have more travel sized mascara than full sized even though the one I use most often is a full sized and that is NYX’s Worth the Hype mascara, as soon as this one came out it replaced my favorite and that was Urban Decay’s Troublemaker, now it is not an exact dupe but it still lengthens the lashes and I love it so much. Other mascara’s that make appearances in my makeup routine are, Urban Decay’s Troublemaker, Tarte’s Maneater, and Benefit’s Roller Lash because I love all of them for very different reasons and sometimes you just want to have your eyelashes make different statements and having a variety of mascara’s assists with that.

Lips are normally the final thing that I do in my every day routine, now for the most part in my every day routine I do not actually wear lipstick. Normally I use an eos or Burt’s Bees, this one is the eos crystal because it is clear it has a bit more shine and I tend to use this in the morning and reapply as needed throughout the day. I prefer none tinted products in many cases for an everyday look but if I am going to need to look nice after my day is over I will carry around a liquid lipstick around with me. Normally it’s something from NYX and in a more nude or pink shade for this time of year.

What are your favorite products in your everyday makeup looks?

Summer fabfitfun Unboxing

I was actually really excited to get this box because I was so pleased with my Spring box, I feel like I waited for this box for almost two months. Each box has options and I did actually choose one of the items in my summer box because I wanted a specific item choice. I am not going to tell you the retail value of my box but I really like having full sized products when it comes to beauty and lifestyle boxes. Reason being, you get a longer trial period when you have a full sized product.

IMG_7974.jpg
IMG_7975.jpg

What was in my box:

  1. Summer & Rose Beach Towel: This was the item I actually chose, I needed a beach towel and I love pineapples because they just scream summer to me. It’s soft and a very large towel. I have already shoved in my beach bag that is in the back of my car at all times. (There are no beaches near me, just creeks but calling it a creek bag is weird when it comes to a Lilly Pulitzer beach bag.)

IMG_7985.jpg

  1. Tarte Tarteist Pro Glow Highlight and Contour Palette: This was the one that I really wanted between the Tarte choice items that were included in the package. (it was either this or the Pro to go palette with liquid liner.) So bad at highlight and contour but I am now amassing highlight and contour products because I want to try them without having this fear of the “clown” contour elements of the past. I am on board for the more natural contour trend that is happening right now.

IMG_7983.jpg

  1. ELEMIS Papaya Enzyme Peel: Okay so I have a confession to make, I have never done a peel in my life that has not left my skin irritated and burning, I have very sensitive skin so I am hesitant to even try this product. I am however hopeful for a better result with this because it is not only dermatologically tested but it is also a cream exfoliator so it may have less of a detrimental effect on my skin. The jury is still out but after I try it out maybe I’ll give it a review.

IMG_7978.jpg

  1. Minor History Post Script Wallet: It’s real cute, I saw it and instantly thought of how nice it would be to slip into a beach bag or just in your pocket if you don’t want to take an entire purse with you when you are going out to an event or a bar with friends. I am one of those people who carries around a backpack with about five items in it. I carry a large bag because you never know who is going to say, “Can you hold onto this?” and you just have to roll with it and add another pound to your already heavy backpack. I am a fan of the wallet though and cannot wait to use it.

IMG_7984.jpg

  1. Jaboneria Marianella Hawaiian Black Lava Body Caviar: That just sounds luxurious doesn’t it? Body caviarthat’s great to be honest. It has charcoal in it and that is such a trendy thing right now because of the benefits of charcoal and your skin. I must say I am excited to try it out and it smells different, it’s not a bad different I am just not sure how to quantify its smell. It smells like tea and honey which are ingredients as well as coffee and aloe vera, it makes for an interesting scent combination.

IMG_7981.jpg

  1. FOREO Luna fofo: This product was teased on the fabfitfun Instagram account and it is a smart facial cleanser, I still haven’t downloaded the app yet or for that matter used it, I really should because it seems like a really good idea because it allows you to connect via Bluetooth to the app and get all sorts of coaching on your skin and your girl really needs to do better with her moisturizing and skin care routine. It came in a variety of colors I got the fofo in Pearl Pink. Maybe this is just a good excuse for me to get better at my routine and how I view my skin, I am hopeful that it works as well as it promises. I downloaded the app and followed the directions, I must say after my first time using the cleanser my skin feels nice, I would like to give it some more time to really see if it’s just a placebo effect or actually helping me keep my skin moisturized and young.

IMG_7977

  1. COOLA Face Sport SPF 50 White Tea Moisturizer: So like I have said a million times, I have sensitive skin and my face is sensitive to just about everything so during the summer I bathe in sunscreen so having a facial sunscreen that not only smells good, doesn’t feel heavy, and is SPF 50 is a God send for the preservation of my skin.

IMG_7980.jpg

  1. Pier 1 imports Marble Ring Dish: This is just a cute little marble dish for rings or other jewelry, right now mine is sitting on my bar cart as if it is a decoration or a place to put spoons. I love little décor pieces that can be multifunctional but also very nicely designed and aesthetically pleasing to the eyes.

IMG_7979.jpg

Overall my impression of the box as with the spring box blew my mind, I have been thinking about starting to subscribe to this box for well over a year now and I finally did it. There is no part of me that regrets this purchase, I love the quality and the items that I receive in these boxes and I am looking forward to the next autumn box.

Did you get different items or the same? How do you feel about them?

What was in my June ipsy Glam Bag?

So I feel like I just published my May Glam Bag unboxing? Unbagging? I don’t know. Oh wait, I did earlier in the week. Here is me, MJ, trying to play catch up and get back into the swing of actually actively blogging and being back into the social media sphere.

So June is now over and I cannot believe that we are already into July, that means that this year (2018) is over half over and that is actually insane to me because I feel like it was just January about 25 minutes ago. Alas that also means that we are in the heat of summer down here in Arkansas and I was not prepared for the summer down here and from what everyone tells me it still gets worse. Your girl is from northern Indiana, though it is apparently this hot up north as well but I digress this is a new summer for me and I can understand why people spend so much time in the water or in the air conditioning down here. Wish me and my now very bronze skin luck, I am seriously tanner than I have ever been in my entire life.

On to the bag!

IMG_7992.jpg

So the bag this month was pretty subdued and I was actually a huge fan of it was three shades transitioning from red to pink, it was a very simple design and it just reminded me of watermelon without the rind and I was here for it.

The products:

June.jpeg

  1. Rounded Soft Blend brush by Mint Pear: I am always on board to get brushes. I am a huge fan of brushes in general and I don’t think I actually own a rounded blending brush like this one, so when I opened it I was excited to get a second brush. It is extremely soft and just densely packed enough that it will be able to blend makeup out really nicely. I got another brush in my April Glam Bag as well and that was a blending brush also. Maybe ipsy knows that I am living without blending brushes or they know that most of the brushes I have are terrible. Memo to you if you are going to buy brushes, don’t skimp on the price you pay for a brush. I have bought so many $1 brushes that I have had to get rid of in 3 months but my more expensive brushes because they are a better quality have lasted me for years. Do not skimp out on your brushes because spending $20 on a brush may hurt when you get it but spending $4 on a brush that you have to buy over and over again because the quality isn’t there hurts a little more.

  1. Feel Pure anywhere balm: I was for some reason not expecting it to be minty. Don’t ask me why but when I opened the seal I was almost shocked that it was indeed minty. It reminds me of a Victoria Secret lip gloss that I had back in high school but a better quality. It is not sticky and can be used on your lips, eyes, and cheeks (according to the packaging). Now personally I will not be using it anywhere besides my lips because my eyes are sensitive as is my skin so it does make a great lip balm. It is a bit tingly I can for sure say that but no more than chewing mint gum, it is not a lip plumper so it doesn’t feel like you are on literal fire. It does feel very moisturizing on the lips and I have been using it for a few days now and my lips are less parched in this heat so I have been rather happy with it so far.

  1. Finding Ferdinand lipstick in Flaming Fuchsia: There is no lie in that color name it is a bright fuchsia color and it would require a very bold look to work with me. I am much more of a nude lip or a light pink lip because I tend to stick with a more dramatic eye look. It however is a beautiful color on and maybe with a shiny clear coat over it or something with a little sparkle it would make a really good look because it does have a slight shimmer to it. I have never heard of this brand before so I did some research on my own with it and I must say I am very impressed with their makeup offerings and brand as a whole. I am excited to find a reason to wear this lip color because it is highly pigmented and I love the fact that it is a travel or mini size just to slip in a bag. The packaging is beautifully simple and I am always very impressed by that.

  1. Natural-Tox Apple Sheet Mask by the SAEM: I love face masks and this is another Korean beauty mask, if you read my May Glam Bag unbagging you know that I got a mask there as well. This is an apple mask and I didn’t know the benefits of apple when it came to skin but apparently it’s benefits are smoothening and brightening. Now I don’t have dull skin for the most part but I am excited to try this mask in general because I don’t think I have ever had a sheet mask that I haven’t enjoyed. I just have a drawer full of sheet masks in my bathroom so it’s very clear that I need to start using them.

  1. Natural Acai Berry Mask Sheet by the SAEM: I was a little shocked to get two sheet masks in the same glam bag. I don’t actually know how I feel about that; it is no fault of the people who hand-picked my products it is just a hang up of mine. Like I just mentioned, I love sheet masks and this is a firming mask. Now I have pretty firm skin still because my skin is not that old (at least I hope not) but I am up for trying anything once when it comes to beauty. Okay, that’s a lie, I am up for anything that won’t make my very sensitive skin hate me for a week.

  1. M.A.C Prep+Prime Skin Primer: I was not expecting a sixth item in the bag but according to the card in the bag it was an extra for everyone if I remember correctly, I have since lost the card. (my bad) I normally use a color correcting primer because I have a red undertone but I was really excited to try this out because I swatched it on my hand to see how it felt on my skin and it made my hand feel silky so I am actually really looking forward to using this on my face to see how my skin reacts to it. As someone with sensitive skin (which I have mentioned three dozen times in this entry) I have to be careful what products I put on my skin and I am hoping that I do not have a reaction to it.

As I am writing this I actually just got an email that my July Glam Bag is being prepared and per usual I am not going to see what products are going to be included in my bag because that would ruin the surprise and when it comes to these almost mystery subscription boxes I actually really like the mystery element.
