August Favorites

So I am making myself a promise that for the rest of the year I am going to stick to my gosh darn posting schedule! (Let’s see how long that lasts.)

Also I haven’t done a favorites post in a while but I feel the need too. I had so much planned to write in August and I didn’t do any of it. Oops my bad.

I moved in July so most of August I spent a lot of time trying to make this new place my own and it is a slow but steady process. This is not going to be a long post just because I didn’t have a long list of absolutely new things in August.

First of all, August was extremely hot, 90 degrees or more on most days and it did not rain much and I am a person who loves rain. It is a very calming noise for me and pairing it with calming spa music or just instrumental music can really help me focus. I know that is not true for everyone but for me personally I like to have rain and calming music when I’m working on things. Right now I am watching a YouTube video from a creator that I watch all the time but it is really distracting. A rain sound generator like Rainy Mood, Infinite Storm, and others is just a noise in the background without the distraction.

So my next item is a makeup product and that was the Jeffree Star Cosmetics Velour Liquid Lipstick in ‘?’ which was an exclusive in the summer box and I have been raving about it since then. I know that it was exclusive but in an overarching sense I love the formula, it’s not super drying and it wears beautifully.

Next is the Korres Wild Rose Vitamin C Brightening Sleeping Facial, so I got this in my spring fabfitfun box and I have found that it keeps my skin really hydrated overnight, I don’t use it every night but I have been loving it so much in the last month or so.

This is another face product that I got in my Winter fabfitfun box and again in my August Glam Bag Plus so now I have two and it was the Ahava Hydration Cream Mask, this can be washed off after a few minutes or left on all night; I leave it on overnight because it gives me good all night hydration.

Last but not least, a late month favorite was Taylor Swift’s new album Lover, it’s still in my car and I am still listening to it on and off even almost a month after release. I for sure played the album on repeat for almost a week in my car and I have yet to regret it, favorite tracks include Paper Rings, The Man, Cruel Summer, You Need to Calm Down, and Afterglow. Let’s be real the whole album is great but those are the ones that I listen to on repeat.

Like I said I didn’t have a lot of new favorites last month just because there was unpacking to do and a whole host of other things that really kept me from branching out last month. I think this month is trending the same way and there is nothing wrong with that.

Did you have any favorites last month that rocked your world?

I hope that everyone has a great rest of the week and I will be back on Sunday (I promise) with another post!

March Favorites

Sorry I disappeared again and missed an upload, my space bar stopped working last weekend so I had to take it to get fixed for the second time in a month…so much fun. That meant however that I didn’t have the ability to post on my usual day because I didn’t have my usual computer.

Though guess who’s back, back again, MJ’s back, tell your friends. No seriously though, I am hoping for no more laptop issues so I can actually have a routine posting schedule. I’m trying, I really am.

March favorites though, I had a few not as many as usual but still some great items that I found myself reaching for a lot in the month of March.

My parents were gone for a little over a week in March visiting family in the north and I was tasked with poodle care, they are both cute and I love them even though they were both pains in my butt for different reasons. It was nice just hanging out with them for such an extended period of time. By the end of it I was just really excited to go home and sleep in my own bed, alone, with no poodles in sight. They lived with me last year while my parent’s house was being finished so I spent a lot of time with them from May to the end of October when they moved about half an hour north west from where I live, it’s only like 15 miles but because the roads are so twisty it takes a lot longer to get there.

One thing for sure that was one of my favorites in late February and early March, even into this month was my Chromebook, I had a rocky start with it because I was sold a piece of software I couldn’t use and that was a mess but I am over it. The store I bought the computer from I probably won’t step into for a while because they made me feel like I had been had. It really came in handy when I didn’t have my regular laptop and I am a huge fan of it because I can use it as a laptop and a tablet. So convenient, I have been a Mac user for over a decade now but it’s kind of nice to have a second operating system on hand just in case.

Next was my facial oil, now I don’t use it every day because my skin is pretty acne prone and I noticed that when I add more oil to it I have a lot more breakout days. I was using Derma Deli’s Pumpkin Seed oil but it was too much for my skin even using it once every other day. So in February I switched over to Pacifica’s Super Flower, I do like it more it is not as oily as ones I have used in the past and I can use it slightly more often as long as I mix it in with my moisturizer. I know that’s not what you are supposed to do but that seems to be the only way that it will work and I don’t have major breakout issues.

I am trying to eat better this year, some days are easier than others in that department but I am also a person who snacks, I don’t know why but I do, stress eating and all of that. I found however that I really like prepackaged seaweed snacks and I am lucky enough to have an Asian market within 15 minutes of where I live. They are crunchy and not too many calories so it’s like chips but not as bad for you. You for sure have to like the taste of seaweed though and I know people who don’t so if you like seaweed I suggest you find some, I usually get mine at Wal Mart or Target but the Asian market has a much bigger selection of brands.

Last but not least, I have been on a cozy mystery kick this year, they are the only books that I have actually read, I’m on my 11thbook of the year and they have all been by two authors. The one that was one of my favorites last month was Carol J. Perry, I finally caught up with her Witch City Mysteries series and I couldn’t put them down, they are really fun and easy to read and they keep you guessing on “who done it” it adds an element of magic and witchcraft in a beautiful way where it’s not overbearing on how magic it is but it is used as a tool to help solve crimes. I just really enjoy the series, her main character is fiery and multi-talented with a cat sidekick and I love it so much.

If you are looking for cozy mystery recommendations I would suggest the Meg Langslow series from Donna Andrews, they are bird themed titles and that’s hilarious, or the Hannah Swensen Mysteries by Joanne Fluke and they are all baking themed, that is the series that I am currently reading. Though I need catch up with the three or four new books from Donna Andrews. I like reading cozy mysteries because they make great beach reads or reads during a break in your day, I read them while I am on the stationary bike and I find that when I get to the “good part” at the end of the book where the heroine or hero is in danger that I get my best workout times.

I have so many books to read but I am on my mystery kick at the moment, a few years ago it was post 1900 pre World War 1 British period literature so I get on kicks and read ten or 15 books in the same vein and then get sick of them.

So that’s it for my March favorites, nothing really all that groundbreaking but I enjoyed them.

Did you have any favorites in March? Got any book suggestions?

I’ll see everyone on Saturday for a new post!

Top 5 Favorite Mascaras

I have used plenty of different mascaras over the years since I started wearing makeup and felt comfortable enough to get near my eyes with a wand of black death. Like everyone else who has used mascara before I have poked myself in the eye with the wand and then gotten the mascara all over my face.

I am a wearer of glasses so I would probably be able to see the results better, as would the people around me if I wore contacts but that’s never going to happen. I have also never worn false lashes; (I know shocking) so I don’t know their benefits either because I am afraid of my eyes reaction to the lash glue.

I have used mascaras in the past that I used once and never used again because it either gave me some sort of reaction or it didn’t do what it was advertised to do. I have worn mascaras for short times that I loved but when it came to long wear they flaked way too easily and irritated my eyes so these mascaras in this post represent my five favorite in the last few years but mostly within the last year because I have begun to diversify what kind of mascara I get because of my ipsy and now Birchbox subscriptions.

Let me tell you all about my eyelashes because what I use may not work for everyone, everyone has different lash issues as well as different sensitivities and lash wants and needs so what I like you may really not and that is totally cool because we can all have opinions, isn’t that a beautiful thing?

These are not in any particular order; I don’t have a number one favorite of these five because they all do the job that I want them to do while making my eyelashes look great.

Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash

I have been using this mascara for years and it has never disappointed me. It is on the pricy side but it is worth it if you wear mascara every day. I really like the curved brush because I feel like it really makes my eyelashes pop and look amazing even with just one coat. It can get clumpy but I think that is more user error rather than product error because granted I love mascara I am still not perfect at putting it on even though I have been wearing it since like 2007. I used to be able to get away without it but I don’t wear eyeliner anymore so I have to wear something around my eyes.

NYX Cosmetics Worth the Hype

I have been loving this for a good year now and I don’t see me ever feeling any different about it. If you read my February Beauty Haul you know that I had to buy a new one so that’s why this one isn’t open. I am going to try and finish off some other mascaras I already have in play before I start this one. I love the way it makes my lashes look so this is automatically one of my favorites and one of the only non-prestige items on this list.

Doucce Maxlash Volumizer

This is a newer mascara in my makeup bag, I got a sample in my May Glam Bag from ipsy last year and I raved about it then and I had only worn it once. I still really love it because it does give you the volume of false lashes with one coat. (I imagine they feel like my eyelashes do when coated in this mascara.) It doesn’t flake which is so great and it’s only a trial size so I can use a lot more of it in the window of time when it is still good. I got a second sample in the Gold Holiday Collection and that made me really happy because it’s nice to have a backup.

Too Faced Better Than Sex

Okay so the name is funny, I have been getting travel sizes of this product every year around Christmas since probably 2015, it was one of the first prestige mascaras that I ever owned and so it is one of my favorites. Now I don’t even remember what mascara I used to buy when I started to wear makeup, I could not tell you now. This is one of those products that I always have in my makeup bag because it is a staple for me. It is a go to for me because I know what it’s going to look like. It’s a good mascara with a really great name so I can’t be upset about it.

Tarte Maneater

This I use whenever I am up at my parent’s house because it’s in my makeup bag there, now this has a really long applicator and it really is a great mascara even though I don’t wear it as often as the others on this list. I love the packaging and I’m not actually sure if they still make this but I would buy it again if they did. I think at one point in the past I had Tarte’s lights, camera, lashes mascara so I like their formula and I know Tarte’s quality and this product is no different.

It’s been a while since I have done a top five for my makeup and it was nice to be able to go through my collection again and actually think about why I like the products that I like.

Do you have a favorite mascara?

February Beauty Haul

So it’s been awhile again, I am at my parents babysitting the dogs while they are on vacation, and I still will be when I post my next post, (which I have already written.) so my opening paragraph may be similar.

I didn’t buy anything in January and I only bought a few things in February, I wasn’t planning on buying anything but then my mascara went bad and almost gave me an eye infection, it was red for like two days so I threw it away and bought a new one. Well while I was there I got a few things. This is not going to be a long post because it was only three new things and a tried and true favorite.

I am just going to briefly mention the tried and true favorite, it is also the thing that expired and made me look like I had pink eye for a day and a half. My NYX Worth the Hype mascara, I still love it because normally I am not a person who will purchase a full sized mascara anymore, if it is a prestige brand I tend to lean toward the travel sized products just because once you open a mascara they have such a short shelf life before they go bad and when you spend so much money on a product you can only use for a few months.

Next, onto the new things, so Colourpop is now in my Ulta and I am excited to be able to see the products in person instead of looking online and hoping that I get colors right. So I got Colourpop’s No Filter Concealer in I think the shade Fair 02. I have heard mixed reviews on their concealer but I like the shade range because the shade that I got is lighter than most of the concealers that I have seen on the market.

A few months ago I got a sample size of the All-Nighter Setting Spray from Urban Decay and they have a display of them on the counter in my Ulta so as am impulse buy I purchased the travel size because I really enjoy the setting spray. I don’t wear setting spray every day but when I do I reach either for that one or for my Colourpop All-Star Setting Spray.

Last but not least I have been experimenting with facial oils and I decided to pick up another one to try out. I have very sensitive combination skin and I always have to be really careful with the combination of products that I put on my face but I like Pacificia, I used their makeup wipes for quite some time while I was in college so when I saw their Flower Power Rapid Response facial oil. It has rose and blue tansy and I know that my face doesn’t react to rose and I was excited to see that. I can only use it about once a day or sometimes even once every other day because of my skin but it has been a really great addition to my skin care routine.

Did anyone else get anything new in beauty in February? Is there anything you are currently coveting when it comes to skin care and beauty?

I’ll be around with another post Saturday, so I’ll see everyone then!

January Favorites

Been a while since I have done a favorites post and I feel like in January I had some actual new favorite things. I am going to try and keep this on the short side because I didn’t actually start writing this until about an hour ago, to be honest. It has been one of those weeks where I am working a lot on original writing and I have let myself take less time to write my blog posts which isn’t okay.

Most of my favorites were beauty related this last month because I actually really started to hit hard on my skin care routine. So that is where I am going to start.

Peter Thomas Roth: Water Drench Cloud Cream Cleanser

This was a late month purchase and then use, I love it so much because there is almost no fragrance and it doesn’t leave my skin feeling dry, there are no microbeads in it like most of my pervious cleansers and I am happy to report that it is keeping my skin issues at bay.

Lush Cosmetics: Karma Komba Shampoo Bar

I have been using the same Tea Tree shampoo for like two years now and I was finding that it just wasn’t doing the right things for my hair and scalp so I tried something different and I love Lush, I really do, their Outback Mate soap is my absolute favorite and their bath bombs are amazing. It lasts about the same length of time between washes as my other shampoo but I love the smell and how it makes my hair feel. I also like that it’s not in a bottle and I can put it in a tin that I have from Lush already so I don’t have to recycle another bottle. Small steps, right?

Hello: Activated Charcoal mouthwash

Spoiler alert, it’s activated charcoal that mean when you spit into the sink it looks like you are expelling the foamy devil but I love it so much. To be honest I was not a huge fan of mouthwash because of how harsh it felt in my mouth, this one is not too bad on that, it might be because of the coconut oil but I am a huge fan of it. It’s vegan and they don’t test on animals so those are two huge pluses in my book! They have really simple packaging and if my Target would get them back in stock I would go pick another one up, I think I am going to have to go on the hunt for it before I run out.

Tarte: Shape tape in Fair

So I finally got on the shape tape train, I have been using Urban Decay’s Naked Skin since about 2015 and I had to get another concealer and I have been hearing about this one for so long that I figured, why not. The first time I used it, it made my under eye area pretty tight, not going to lie but the second time I didn’t have that problem and every time since then I have not had any of those issues with it. I really like it, it does the job I need it to do when it comes to concealing. It has a much bigger applicator on it than I am used to so I am still learning exactly how to use it and that for me is very much just trial and error and then buffing and blending with my beauty sponge. That’s right, I gave the beauty sponge another try and I don’t hate it.

Okay this last one is not beauty related at all it is just a convenience related thing. I have been taking a lot of notes with my Professional Development and my required history hours for my license transfer. It is a long and tedious process of a lot of videos and then a quiz, you know as you do.

Bic: Atlantis Pen in black

It’s such a simple thing, it’s a pen but it has been my favorite pen for years now, I like how it fits in my hand and it writes really well. I have had other pens in the past that I have loved for years but they have been discontinued like the Bic Pro+ that I haven’t seen in years now so I had to switch and the Atlantis was the one that I picked up and have not put down since, I have like six around my desk, two in my back pack, and some strewn around my apartment for quick note taking or adding to my grocery list.

So those were some of my favorite things from January, did you have any favorites?

See everyone on Tuesday (I hope) with another post,

MJ’s Top 12 Beauty Products of 2018

2018 was a crazy and intense year for beauty for me. I amassed so many beauty products in 2018 and it’s a lot you guys, a lot. I got introduced to a lot of new brands because of ipsy as well as FabfitFun and I found a lot of things that I really liked because of those subscription boxes.

All of these opinions are my own per usual.

NYX Worth the Hype mascara

Why I love it: This one of my early purchases this year and it is a pretty good mascara at the price point. (it retails for $8.00 on the NYX Cosmetics website) You get pretty good volume that doesn’t look super fake even with a few coats. This was my go-to mascara for the first half of the year, it came out really early in 2018 and it was my absolute favorite for such a long time this last year. It lasts all day, it doesn’t irritate my eyes unlike some mascara’s because I have super sensitive everything and I was a huge fan of it.

Artic Fox Hair Color in Wrath

Why I love it: So I got my hair colored professionally for a long time, I am not naturally a red head but I love the color that I have had since probably 2013. It became for feasible for me to dye my own hair and Artic Fox was one of those brands that I had seen online before so I knew what it was. It is a beautiful color and everyone loves it, I am still trying to get better at dying my own hair because it’s hard you guys I always miss spots. It was something like $16 at Sally Beauty and that is a lot cheaper than having it done at a salon. The dye is also vegan and cruelty free which I am always really excited about when it comes to beauty products.

Urban Decay All Nighter Liquid Foundation in shade 0.5

Why I love it: Urban Decay was the first prestige foundation I ever got when I was younger when everyone was still using powder foundation, I talked about that in one of my haul posts when I bought the product. It doesn’t break my skin out, it isn’t super heavy, and it looks amazing. (It retails for $40 at Ulta) It is more on the pricy side so I find myself subbing it out with less expensive foundations for my everyday just going to work wear. It doesn’t clog my pores though and every time I wear it I fall in love with it over and over again.

Foreo Luna Fofo

Why I love it: I got this in my summer fabfitfun box and I use it all the time. It makes my skin feel great. (It retails for $89 on the Foreo website) I would for sure buy from their skincare range in the future. It is on the pricy side but I was lucky enough to get it in a subscription box, seriously one reason that I am always so hyped about getting the fabfitfun box four times a year.

Colourpop All-Star Setting Spray

Why I love it: I am not a person who usually uses a setting spray but I got this one on a whim (honestly it was to qualify for free shipping because I am one of those people) but I actually really like the product.

Murad Skin-Perfecting Lotion

Why I love it: Again another gem from one of my fabfitfun boxes from last year, I use it every morning and it makes my skin feel so good. I am already planning on buying another tube when I run out of this one. (It retails for $40 on their website as well as other beauty retailers.)

Soo’AE Rose Mist

Why I love it: I used this for the first time over the summer when I burnt the crap out of myself and it was just a little extra hydration for my skin and it really helped out. Now I use it whenever my skin feels dry or tight because even just that little bit helps out so much. Now that we are in the winter months it is so dry outside and a mist is so useful. (It retails for $14 on their website, I got it at Wal-Mart for about the same price.)

Garnier Skin Active Micellar Cleansing Water (for waterproof makeup)

Why I love it: MJ has really sensitive skin and therefore I have to take extra care when I choose the products that go on my face and that includes what I use to take my makeup off. I used the micellar wipes for a long time but this seems a little better because it is used with cotton pads instead of the pre-moistened sheets. (it retails for $6.59 through Target.)

Coty Airspun Face Powder

Why I love it: This last year has been the year where I discovered a lot about beauty and makeup and setting powder is a thing apparently. I have used it a few times and I really like how it works and it just smells good. So I really like it. (It retails for $7.99 at Walgreens)

Tree Hut Sugar Lips sugar scrub

Why I love it: It’s so great. It leaves my lips feeling moisturized and not rough. This was another product mentioned in one of my monthly hauls and I use it a few times a week when my lips feel dry and gross. It smells good and it is easily transportable because it is in such a small container. (it retails for $5.99 at Ulta which is where I purchased it.)

Colourpop It’s a Princess Thing eyeshadow palette

Why I love it: I didn’t really include much makeup on this list and I just kind of realized that, I have been a fan of Colourpop for a few years but never bought anything from them. One of my friends shared the Disney Princess collection with me when it was announced and I had to have this palette. I love it, the pigments are great, and the color names are amazing. (It retails for $20 on the Colourpop website.)

Cactus brush cleaner

Why I love it: It’s really nice to be able to clean brushes on this, it was an impulse buy at the time but I am such a huge fan of it. It cleans my brushes really well and it is rubber so it is really easy to clean after each brush cleaning session. I got it so long ago at Marshall’s so I don’t remember what the price was, nor do I know the exact brand.

Did you have any favorite beauty items in 2018?

            See you all on Saturday!

November Favorites

Okay, so I was wrong; this was supposed to go up yesterday but after work on Monday I came home and felt really ill so I didn’t get a chance to write the post. I spent most of yesterday (Tuesday) in bed because I felt really poorly, I don’t know if it was because I got a little dehydrated on Monday, I had a weird eating day, I was getting a little sick, or I was just overly tired that made me feel really run down. So here I am on my couch watching The Muppets Christmas Carol and writing out this post which I am hoping to be rather short.

In November I feel like I didn’t have a lot of physical favorites my favorites were more getting my apartment back. My mom and the puppies finally moved out at the very end of October after living with me since the last week in May because my parents new house was finally finished. So getting my apartment back under my control was really nice.

I feel like most of November was working on getting my place back to being my place but guess who got their office back? I know if it wasn’t me it would be rather sad. It was me, I got my office back and now I have been in a more creative mood because I have that separation back within my apartment. They tell you not to work where you sleep and I had to do that when I lived at my parent’s house and then for several months while they finished off the house. (It took quite a bit longer than originally expected, sub-contractors are so fun to deal with! I’m kidding, but you can’t read sarcasm through the internet.) I was really happy to get my office back but I didn’t have a desk until probably the week before Thanksgiving so I have been able to get back on track with writing novels and blog posts while also working on my Bullet Journal and everything else I do in my office. I got a new across the hall neighbor who talks loudly on his phone and a new upstairs neighbor who tromps around just as loudly as the woman who used to live above me, but this is not a blog post to complain because I feel as if I have been doing that more frequently recently and I don’t like what kind of person that makes me. Here is what my desk currently looks like, it is just a lot of organized chaos at the moment, lots of notebooks, Christmas cards I have send out, stuff for other blog posts, and my computers. Ignore my garbage can and the mess under my table, it is just how life works.

Next favorite, so I have been using Micellar cleansing clothes for almost the entire year when it comes to taking off my makeup but I recently purchased a bottle of cleansing water from Garnier and you soak cotton pads and then take your makeup off that way. Now I don’t know if it’s better for the environment but it seems more economical to buy a bottle of cleansing water and cotton pads rather than the wipes. I am a huge fan of it because it does a really good job taking off makeup even the stubborn eye makeup that normally is what gets me every time.

I got my office back but I also got the rest of my place back and I have been able to get it back in order so it makes my life a little less chaotic and I have been loving getting everything back where I want it.

Okay, so I have a confession to make. I am one of those people who starts decorating for Christmas early in November so my apartment was fully decorated well over a week before Thanksgiving. Now I did not light my tree until after Thanksgiving so it wasn’t too bad. All the pictures of that are up at the top, I grew up in a house that had many many Christmas trees so I have four in my apartment, one is not pictured but it is really small and next to my bed.

Last favorite, I got a new piece of artwork at Hobby Lobby and it is my entire life, it says Messy Bun and getting stuff done and that has been my life motto long before I had ever heard the phrase. When it got around time for finals in university my hair was up in a bun and I had a look on my face that said leave me alone so that has translated into my adult life as well. Graphic artwork with catchy phrases are some of my favorites even if they are mass produced. (Ignore my hand in the picture, I am still figuring out how to photograph reflective surfaces!)

So did any of you have any favorites in November?

            See y’all on Saturday!

Top Halloween Movies

Snapseed.jpg

Happy Halloween everyone! I wasn’t sure what I was going to write for my Halloween blog post but I figured, I am a fan of movies and maybe some of you needed a last minute not so scary movie to watch on the big holiday. I am not a fan of scary or horror movies so know that this list is pretty family friendly when it comes to movies.

This year I am not planning on dressing up, today is my parent’s move in day to their new house and it has been a long process so that is where I will be all day and probably into the evening. By the time I get back to my apartment I may put on my devil horns and crack into a couple of Reese’s on my couch while contemplating when it is appropriate to start putting up my Christmas decorations. (Now don’t worry, they won’t go up until probably mid-November and the Christmas music won’t start until probably the week of Thanksgiving but I am preparing.)

Behind Christmas Halloween is my favorite holiday, it appeals to my inner goth and I want nothing more to appease her on most days. Well, this got a little weird so I guess without further ado, here are some of my ultimate go to Halloween movies.

All the movies pictured above are movies that I own and have access to so it is not all ten movies, some of them I watch on Netflix and some are still packed so I don’t have access to them at the moment.

Ghostbusters

I will watch both the original and the one that came out a few years ago, I like them both so don’t come after me. The original at the time was so groundbreaking and I didn’t see it until probably 2015-2016 just because I had never gotten around to seeing it. I feel like Ghostbustersis one of those movies that is such a cult classic that everyone needs to see it at least once in their life.

The Covenant

This one is one of my favorite movies ever, it to me is really underrated and most people I talk to say it is terrible. It might be but I love it. It has some really memorable lines and some questionable scenes for it just being a group of teenagers, who of course were played by adults but still teenagers in the film. This movie may not be for everyone but there are some actors in it who were favorites in other TV shows and movies who you may recognize if you get it a watch.

Halloweentown

Like every 90’s kid with cable I grew up watching Disney Channel and I watched all of the Disney Channel Original Movies probably until I was in high school, I looked up a list one day or there was a Buzzfeed quiz (I don’t remember Buzzfeed has so much content anymore) that made you check off all the ones that you had seen and I checked off a good chunk of them. Halloweentonwas one of those movies that I looked forward to watching every year as well as many of its sequels, provided they kept the original cast. When the original actress who played Marnie wasn’t in the fourth one I don’t think I actually watched it. It’s such a good movie about accepting who you are and who your family is and I would highly recommend.

Beetlejuice

Again Beetlejuiceis such a cult classic and now I can’t say the title again in fear of summoning him. Haha, movie humor. It’s a good movie, some parts are a little questionable but overall it is one of my favorites to watch at this time of year. Everytime I hear Day-O by Harry Belafonte I automatically think of the dinner party scene in this movie when they all start dancing. I feel like this movie is also a cult classic, I watched the animated series growing up when it was I think on Nickelodeon, I only saw it in rerun form because it aired before I was born but I remember watching it but I didn’t see the film until I was in college because my best friend loves Tim Burton so much.

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Okay, this one is probably the most risqué one on my list. I started watching this one when I was probably in high school, how my parents let me I will never know but I did. Whenever someone mentions Tim Curry this is the first thing I think of, followed by a whole host of other roles that he has played over the years. Every time I hear Time WarpI want to do nothing but dance and if I am alone I do because it is just so catchy. I was in a radio production of this when I was in university and I played Janet so this movie will always hold a special place in my heart.

Nightmare Before Christmas

This is one of those movies that I watch near Halloween and near Christmas because is first of all just an all-around great movie and second of all it is one of those movies that is debatable whether is it a Christmas or a Halloween movie. I feel like this movie, like many of these films, is a cult classic or has a cult following now. You can’t escape seeing someone with Jack Skellington’s face on it this time of year.

It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown

This is my Halloween night movie; I don’t know where my copy is this year because of the move so I will have to skip my tradition this year. It’s just one of those shows, I don’t know if this one counts as a movie because it’s only half an hour long but I am counting it anyway. I loved the Peanutscomics as a kid and the Peanutsare such recognizable characters, I actually have a day calendar this year that is Peanutscomic strips. It’s a cute little movie that like most of the Peanutsanimations is nice.

Corpse Bride

Look another Tim Burton film! Again it has catchy songs and amazing Claymation stop motion. There is so much work that goes into a film like this and it is such a good movie. One year for Halloween I would love to go as the corpse bride, makeup and all, I’ll do it eventually but it is a dream. Good movie, not scary though murder is a central theme.

Coraline

A word to the wise, the end of this still scares me. It’s a great film again Tim Burton kudos on the stop motion and the story line, catchy music from mice. This movie I think appealed to my escapist tendencies but it is a good film. It has a lot of interesting characters and some scenes that are interesting maybe not appropriate for young children. It’s worth a watch though if you get around to it, it’s not based around Halloween but I still feel like because it’s Tim Burton and some of the themes and scenes from the film it does have a Halloween vibe.

Hocus Pocus

I was so scared of this movie as a kid and truthfully I didn’t watch it all the way through until I was out of college. There are some things in this movie seeing it as an adult that I do question how they got into a movie meant for children. It’s good and one of those movies that has such an obsessive following. Though every time I put on a red lip I think that I am channeling my inner Sanderson.

What are some of your favorite Halloween movies to watch to get you in the spooky mood?

July Favorites

I have had a weird few weeks so my blog upload schedule is a little off and I must apologize for that. Sorry, my bad. It’s been an adventure y’all, an adventure.

It’s still weird even though I have been doing favorites videos and posts for a year now to still say that the post is for July even though it is the middle/end of August. I don’t know it’s just something that has always struck me as odd.

I feel like I needed to write something that wasn’t ground breaking, and for sure my first thought was, favorites post. I love favorites posts because sometimes that is how I learn about new things so I enjoy watching favorites videos on YouTube and reading other people’s recommendations for the things that they have been loving over the month prior.

I feel like I didn’t have too many favorites in the month of July just because my last several months has been spent on a house build and that means that I spend my days with construction workers and I haven’t been too adventurous with as many beauty products recently because it is hot as heck outside and makeup melts in this kind of heat, my pores are already clogged with saw dust and Arkansas red clay so I don’t want to do more to my skin.

IMG_8240.jpgThis kind of leads into my first favorite of July, my Luna Fofo from Foreo, I got this in my Summer Fabfitfun box and I have used it so much in the last month or so. I love it, I cannot praise it enough, they recently updated the app and it has made it so much easier to use than it was with the old app. It gives you a personalized skin routine and analyses your skin moisture and that is so great because I live pretty much dehydrated all the time because it is just so hot around here. It gets really deep into the pores on your face and it has definitely helped my skin feel cleaner and less dull. I really do need a better skin care routine, does anyone have any suggestions for sensitive skin? Leave it in the comments below, I would love some suggestions from people who actually have sensitive skin.

Next thing that was a favorite last month, I finally got a monthly planner, I didn’t want a daily planner; I have a Bullet Journal for that, (I do plan on doing a review of my favorite pages so far in the coming months and what I wish I knew before I started and what I will be doing different next year) and I wanted a more condensed schedule so I could plan my blog posts in advance and eventually when I get my YouTube channel back up and running it will house those video schedules and ideas as well. This planner only has a monthly view instead of monthly and weekly and it has made things a lot easier while I am planning out my posts for the next month or the next few months. I have some place to write things down so I don’t forget an idea for a blog post. I had a weekly and monthly last year and I only used the month view and I realized why buy one that is monthly and weekly when I just needed and used the monthly spread. I think in my Bullet Journal next year I will include a monthly spread, but that I will get to in another post.

IMG_8236.jpg

I found myself in July listening to a lot of podcasts, I tend to catch up in waves with the podcasts that I listen to. I have been listener of the Jenna & Julien podcast for almost three years now but I find myself liking to watch those podcasts on YouTube but in February when I moved and it was a 12-hour drive that was all I listened to on my way down laughing the whole time. I also have been a listener of Welcome to Night Vale since about 2013 or so and have loved it ever since. My undergrad is in Communications and I spent a lot of time behind a radio microphone and listening to this podcast about a weird little town that sucks you in from the beginning has been one of the staples on my phone and in my podcast feed for such a long time now. I love the show so much and it is so unique for the modern age we live in. I have probably listened to the series twice or three times over the last few years and every time I hear it I love it just as much. It allows you to paint this picture in your head without giving you any actual visual details and that is a mark of great storytelling. A newer podcast that I have started listening to is Good Morning Night Vale which is a recap show with a few of the cast members reviewing and talking about the show as a whole and it is so insightful, like listening to the director’s commentary on a movie and it brings a whole new level of understanding to the show as a whole. Because of Welcome to Night Vale whenever something odd happens I want to say, “and now the weather.” Do you guys have any podcasts to suggest?

IMG_8237.jpg

Because of all of the podcasts I listened to I found myself actually needing to carry around my Mophie charger, I have had it since college and I don’t use it all that often but when I am using my phone a lot (thanks Pokémon Go) I need to carry it around with me, even with a new phone. It is not an everyday need but it is nice to have around when I do actually need it.

Just a few favorites in the last month and that is okay. Did you have any new favorites this month? I would love to hear about them.

5 More Eyeshadow Palette Favorites

So I did a post like this a few months ago in regard to my top 5 favorite or go to eye shadow palettes. I feel like I could do five or six of these posts to actually get through my palette collection. I need to stop buying palettes but let’s be honest they come out with so many a year that are amazing that I want all of them.

I tend to roll through three or four eyeshadow palettes at a time where I use those palettes over and over again until I get tired of them and move on to another palette, I do go back to palettes do not get me wrong but like I had my original Top 5 I have 5 more to show you today.

Like last time I am going to talk about each palette individually.

IMG_8069.jpgTarte-Tartelette Toasted

Okay this one has been one of my favorites since it came out last year. I have used it a lot since then. I think Tarte is one of my favorite brands for eyeshadow I love their formula and their eyeshadow smells great. That’s not normally something you think about when it comes to eyeshadow, smell. It has a pretty even distribution of shimmer and matte shades all in warm tones that are perfect for the fall. I think this was my go to palette last fall in my YouTube videos and whenever I needed to wear makeup because it is small and compact enough to carry around unlike some of my larger palettes. This is the only tartelette palette that I own but I have the tartist pro (that was in my top 5 post), their magic star palette that came out around Christmas, and the Be a Mermaid & Make Waves palette.

Too Faced- La Petite Maison

Normally the time of your that I buy Too Faced is the holiday’s I got this palette a few years ago. I love the formula for Too Faced, their Sweet Peach palette is one of my absolute go to’s when it comes to a lot of looks. I use this one usually around the holidays or during the winter because it has some beautiful colors in it and the packaging it came in was amazing, I finally got rid of it about four months before I moved from Indiana. I love Too Faced packaging especially around the holidays. They never disappoint on the color pay off or the pigmentation of the color.

IMG_8070.jpgLorac- Pro 3

Lorac is a relatively new brand in my makeup bag or even in my collection, I think my first palette that I got from that brand was the California Dreaming palette and I have not looked back since. The only problem I have with this one is the color Medallion in my palette is pressed too loose and it comes out in chunks and flakes instead of coming off nicely on the brush and nicely on the eye but that is the only color that I have encountered that was not pressed all that well but it is one of my favorite colors in the palette so that makes me a little sad. I love Lorac’s formula because it goes on well and blends well and all of the colors in this palette are a nice neutral so it goes with all looks and can be used year round.

IMG_8185.jpgUrban Decay X Kristen Leanne- Kaleidoscope Dream

This is probably the most daring palette in my collection and I am not mad about it. This palette is so colorful and so pigmented, there is even and iridescent shade in it that is a combo of two colors, I have worn it sparingly on my eyes and it is beautiful. The colors are so out there and amazing to say the least, I swatched these and my arm looked like a rainbow. I cannot speak more highly of this palette, again Urban Decay is one of my favorite brands. I think my first good foundation was an Urban Decay powder foundation in probably 2007 so this brand has been in my makeup bag for quite some time now and I don’t see that changing any time soon. I love to see brands do collaborations with people and this is no exception.

IMG_8071.jpgMorphe – 35 W

Morphe is a great brand, their packaging is simple but their products are amazing. I have been obsessed with Morphe for a little over a year now. I was so happy when I was able to get it at Ulta because I am one of those people who like to see the makeup before I buy it and also I don’t trust shipping when it comes to makeup especially with eyeshadow because I don’t want to open up my package and find half of the pans cracked. I love Morphe though and this palette is so multi-functional when it comes to colors and looks because there is such a variety of color throughout the palette.

I have come to the conclusion that I need to wear more makeup because I have so many amazing products that I don’t actually use enough because I don’t wear makeup frequently. I love to look at it, swatch it, and then let it sit in a drawer until I want to write a blog post with it. It’s not a good method because all of these products are just calling for me to use them. I feel like sometimes I am limited by my skills when it comes to makeup but then again I remember that I actually need to do my makeup to get any better, it’s such a paradox. Or getting new palettes and having to play tetris to get them all in the drawer, I don’t have a lot of makeup storage space at the moment (I am working on it) but I keep adding to the collection and I need to stop until I have the space to actually put things in.

What are some of your favorite eyeshadow palettes or single shadows?
